Powder coating - powder coat - powder paint & colors
Powder coating is a coating powder consisting of very fine, dry plastic particles and containing no solvents. It is composed of binders, pigments, fillers and additives.
Powder coatings are made from various resin types, including epoxy, polyester, and polyurethane. Mixed powders (also called hybrid powder coatings) are a combination of epoxy and polyester resins, combining the positive properties of both systems.
Applications and properties
- Epoxy powder coating:
- - Indoor applications
It offers high corrosion resistance and is well-suited for applications requiring resistance to chemicals and mechanical stress. However, it is not UV-resistant and may fade or yellow outdoors. It features good adhesion, high mechanical strength, and excellent corrosion/rust protection.
- Polyester powder coating:
- - Outdoor applications
It is known for its high UV and weather resistance, making it ideal for outdoor applications. It is also impact, shock, and abrasion resistant, and offers very good color and gloss retention as well as good mechanical properties.
- Polyurethane powder coating:
- - Indoor and outdoor applications
It offers high weather resistance, good chemical resistance, and is very resistant to abrasion and scratches. However, the prescribed curing conditions must be strictly observed.
- Hybrid powder coating (mixed powder):
- - Indoor and outdoor applications
It is a combination of epoxy and polyester resins, uniting the good properties of both resin types. It is better suited for outdoor use than pure epoxy powder coatings, but not as UV and weather resistant as pure polyester powdercoatings.

What is powder coating and what do you need for powder painting?
Powder coating refers to the finishing of surfaces with colored powder, which is applied to the grounded surface by means of electrostatic charging and then melted and hardened in an oven.
For this project, you will need a powder coating gun, compressor, spray booth, curing oven, a well-ventilated work area, and powder coating/coating powder. Tools such as dust masks and disposable gloves, as well as aids like painting hooks, heat-resistant adhesive tape, and silicone plugs or caps, will make your project easier.
Application on the following metals
The process is suitable for coating metals such as steel, galvanized steel, stainless steel, aluminum, iron, cast iron, copper, brass, lead, sheet metal, as well as heat-resistant surfaces such as glass and ceramics.

Diverse color effects
Powder coat offers a wide variety of surfaces and colors. Our range includes powder coat paint in various RAL colors (such as black, white) and special colors (silver, gold, bronze), with different gloss levels (matte, glossy) and surface textures (smooth, fine texture).
The gloss levels of powder coats are usually specified as a percentage. Various gloss levels are available, ranging from matte to high-gloss. There are also powder coat colors with special effects such as metallics or textured finishes, which can exhibit different gloss levels.
Overview of gloss levels
Matte finish: 0-10% gloss
Matte: 20-30% gloss
Satin finish: 35-55% gloss
Satin sheen: 60-75% gloss
Glossy: 80-85% gloss
High gloss: 90-95% gloss

Surface pretreatment
Careful pretreatment, tailored to the specific requirements, is crucial for the quality and longevity of a powder coating. This includes stripping the existing paint, cleaning, degreasing, and, if necessary, roughening the surface or applying a conversion coating to the workpiece. It forms the basis for permanent adhesion of the powder coating and protection against corrosion.
Typical pretreatment procedures include:
- Surface roughening: Sandblasting is used as the ideal pretreatment for powder coating, depending on the workpiece's condition. Different blasting media are used to create an optimal surface. Blasting fulfills the dual function of cleaning and roughening the surface, thus ensuring the best possible paint adhesion.
- Paint stripping: Paint strippers can also be used to remove paint from surfaces. They are applied to the surface and loosen the paint layer, which can then be removed.
- Degreasing and cleaning: Surface defects are repaired by sanding and, if necessary, filling. Finally, care should be taken to remove grease and oil residues, as well as dirt and rust, which would prevent proper powder adhesion.

Know-how is an advantage
Depending on the requirements, 1, 2, or 3 layers of powder coating paint can be applied. Multi-layer application:
After stripping the paint and degreasing the component, e.g., by glass bead or sandblasting, mask or protect any parts that are not to be coated. Then apply the first coat (primer) and bake it in a preheated oven according to the manufacturer's recommended curing conditions. After baking, remove the component from the oven and allow it to cool briefly. When the object's residual temperature is approximately 70–80°C, apply the second coat of paint (e.g., RAL 9005) and bake it again according to the recommended curing conditions. Repeat this process for any third coat (clear coat).
When baking, please ensure the correct object temperature and holding time are used, as this can vary depending on the thickness of your substrate (ideally measured using a laser thermometer).
The individual steps must be carried out in a single operation to ensure proper cross-linking of the respective layers. The powder coat reaches its final strength approximately 10–30 minutes after cooling.
